Sailed NCL many times BUT now I see that they have added a $12.00 per person a day service charge. This is unacceptable.  We always leave a very good tip to those we interact with and  we know is well deserved but a mandatory service charge! No Way. They also let us know that tipping our favorites, over and above the service charge, would be appreciated  as well. Sounds like double dipping to me.

Thanks for the information on NCL cruises. I am thinking of taking a cruise soon but will not be sailing with NCL. I would not tip if there was service charge.

I am a seasoned cruiser - having cruised HAL, Celebrity, RCCL and Princess.  I have cruised twice on NCL.  The first one was the Hawaii 7 nt return to Honolulu (Pride of Aloha) and the other was a short Vancouver cuise (Norwegian Sun).  The two cruises were entirely different from each other in both service and quality.

The NCL ships themselves are comfortable and very nicely designed.  The entertainment staff on both cruises were excellent with the passengers.

However, on the Hawaii cruise, the quality of food, cleaning and the staff who service them were really bad.  I would not tip for this type of service if off the ship.  It's a shame because if this were my first cruise, it would give an overall sour taste for cruising and NCL ships.  I knew before going on this ship, what to expect with the service, but wanted to do the cruise for the ports.

Having said that about the Hawaii cruise, I found that their international division sailings are an entirely different experience altogether.  The staff are much friendlier and the service a lot better.

I still have my reservations about paying $12.00 a day for their services.

Hi cruisers: We went on our ffist ever cruise in 2008 with Carnival, on the FREEDOM - Transatlantic to Italy.

"Tipping" aka service charges were built in and we too were told that we could "add on".

However, once we investigated onboard, we could also reduce or delete totally the so called tips...we also had an onboard credit, so we reduced some of the charges, used on onbaord credit and added our personal tips directly to those who truly went above and beyond in service...and did not tip anyone who left a little request envelop in our room (the Dining  Room M'aitre D..who never did anything special for anyone we saw who needed his aid or advice.)

Our staff in service in our room was exceptional we told them, sent in a complimentary review and tipped them. We also commented to the pursers' office on other exceptional staff we saw working exrta hard and also a very few who left a bit to be desired.

Overall a fantastic time and we will cruise again.

Thanks fo the NCL headups as we considering them next --and will also ask about the tipping/service fees...not sure they can charge for service not delivered...think I will enquire before we book!

Happy sailing to you all and thanks for a great web page and fantastic information!
