Would you sail on the largest cruise ship in the world

POSTED ON October 26, 2009 3:11 AM

Phil Reimer--It's coming soon...the launch of Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas--the largest cruise ship in the world.

Our question of the day--would you sail on the largest ship in the world?

A few things about Oasis:

  • Oasis officially carries 5600 passengers at double occupancy. However, a lot of those cabins hold 3 and 4 so 6000 or more is likely.
  • It's 16 decks high and longer than the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan.
  • Two decks are allocated for children and teens.
  • There are 22 restaurants, about half you pay for.
  • There's a huge aqua theatre on the back deck and the main theatre is showing the entire Broadway show--Hairspray.
  • The entire ship is laid out as 7 neighbourhoods--one which includes real grass and gardens.

Now, you get the idea. Give me your comments--what do you think? Oh yes, one more thing, the Promenade (or shopping mall) is about 100 yards long. I had to work that in.

Okay, let's get some conversation going on this ship. You can learn more at royalcaribbean.com

What do you think?

Thanks for participating.

I would love to be on that one as I have been on a cruise with Royal Caribbean already and found the ship we were on just great.  We are travelling but not cruising this winter but in 2011 and would like to be on either the Oasis or Allure.  Can hardly wait!

I think it would depend on the type of cruise I was looking for.  If it's one of those "sail to nowhere" kind of cruises, it might be an option as there are lots of activities and places to wander.  For a cruise with "real" destinations, this wouldn't be my first choice.  Too many people trying to get off the same ship in the same sometimes small port or tenders.

We booked the Oasis with four other relatives from Ontario for November 27th 2010 Caribbean cruise. We kind of made the ship the destination rather than the the ports. It was already 50% sold out when we booked a month ago.

If I am on a cruise, I look for my shopping in unique ports of call, not the mall on the ship. There will be line ups for shore excursions & people cramming for first in line at buses, never mind the line up @disembarkation to meet your travel needs post cruise.  Better have a large area for the reception desk.  On the good side, it must be thrilling to see a city on the water.

Hi Phil, we are booked on the Oasis in November 2010 because we have been bored on smaller ships in the past with few activities and facilities..it would be impossible to lack activities on the Allure or Oasis!  The two standard itineraries look comparable to any other line, but in this case the ship itself is the real attraction!  What's the old saying?  "the medium is the message"

Oooh, I can't wait to spend a week with 6000 of my closest ... strangers.

OatS has a passenger space ration of about 37, meaning each person gets roughly that amount of space. This is about the same as Carnival's Pride class ships. On the other hand, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 has a massive passenger space ration of 57.

So I get to board a ship to nowhere and be crammed in with 6000 people all of whom will be in line (for everything) ahead of me.

Count me out.

Would love to be on the ship.  Am somewhat handicapped and unable to disembark at ports of call so depend on ship activities when in port.  Love to shop and enjoy ships interior decor.

Absolutely not.

I don't want to spend my vacation time on AN AMUSEMENT PARK (SHIP), that will defeat the purpose of cruising.

Ricky

Absolutely not.  I can well imagine the huge lines for everything on this ship.  Boarding and disembarkation will be an absolute nightmare.

Thais ship is definitely not for me.

I would love to but not for 7 days. Cruises should be at least 12 days or longer to really enjoy yourself.

Yes we look forward to a cruise on this ship. My wife and I travel with our physically handicapped son. Even if we cannot get a handicap stateroom, the larger staterooms will still be okay to sleep 3 comfortably. Also I assume this ship offers anytime dining.

Our last trip on the Adventure of the Seas was great

Too big!!  We are loyal Royal Caribbean passengers but this one is too big!.. If I got on, I would only sail to nowhere because the lineups to get off would be horrendous.
