Costa Unveils Concordia Compensation

POSTED ON January 27, 2012 12:00 PM

Costa Cruises has finally named its price for compensating passengers of the Concordia. Keep in mind this "final price" is subject to lawyers in a dozen or so countries adding their lawsuits.

Each passenger aboard the Concordia will receive — or be offered — $14,503 Cdn (11,000 euros) from the cruise line, which is owned by Carnival.

The offering is for psychological damages to passengers who were not injured in the incident, including children. The cruise line is also offering to cover medical bills, plus transport and the cost of the cruise itself.

Those who accept the offer must agree to drop all future legal actions against Costa Cruises and they will be paid within a week of acceptance.

Keep in mind there are class-action suits, one in the U.S. looking for $160,000 per person.

What is your opinion on Costa's compensation offer?

All for now.

What part of the deal is when cruise lines feature aging rock 'n rollers...check it out at Cruising Done Right.

think it is fair - there will always be the greedy ones wanting more

This is the first major cruise ship in the western world to sink. Not capsize; not run aground: SINK. And the officers and executives kept human beings on board long after the vessel began listing and sinking.

The captain appears to have been grossly negligent. The company appears to be complicit in the captain delaying evacuation for nearly an hour.

$14K ? Are they kidding?

It is time for the class action suits and the $100K payments.

If you calculate all the items that these people lost such as cameras, personal computers, jewellery, clothes etc. Not to mention the emotional stress I think the amount is insignificant. People do bring the best they have on cruises. I would be not be happy with the amount offered and be rather insulted! I would sue.

Gross negligence caused this . Cannot imagine the people who survived will get over this quickly or easily. No one is out to take advantage of the situation but this paltry offer for compensation is ridiculous.

I would PAY a cruise line $15,000 to get on a cruise where the ship sinks.  The odds against it happening are  astronomical. The last time a ship went down was 1956 ... the Andrea Doria.  It would be an adventure of a lifetime, and you could share the story with family, friends, and relatives till you grow old and are confined to a wheel chair.

Even if you go down with the ship, it still beats cancer, stroke, heart attacks, and Alzheimer's .
